Both UWA Tennis Teams Beat Shorter to Advance to GSC Semi-Finals

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Both the men and women's tennis teams from the University of West Alabama defeated Shorter in the quarterfinals of the Gulf South Conference Tennis Tournament Thursday at Lagoon Park.
 
The Tiger women notched a 5-3 victory over the Lady Hawks and the UWA men defeated the Hawks, 5-1.
 
The UWA men improved to 11-11 with the win and moves on to the semi-final round to face top-seeded West Florida Friday at 9 a.m. West Florida was a 5-0 winner over Alabama Huntsville on Thursday.
 
"The men competed across the board better today than any match this fall," UWA head coach Jeff Beaman said. "We need to carry that into tomorrow's match against West Florida."
 
The Tiger men captured all three doubles matches with Caspar Schuetze and Henrik Sinkko winning at No. 1, Julius Kaverinen and Christopher Wood at No. 2 and Nicolai Jochamowitz and Andrii Stratiienko winning the No. 3 court. Singles wins by Kaverinen and Sinkko clinched the match for UWA.
 
The No. 3 seeded Tiger women improved to 15-6 and play second seed Valdosta State Friday at 1:30. Valdosta State defeated Delta State, 5-1, to advance to the semi-finals.
 
"Our women came back very strong after losing some very close doubles matches," Beaman said. "I am proud of what they did today and I am looking forward to the rematch with Valdosta State."
 
After Shorter won two of three doubles matches, the UWA women stormed back to post wins in four singles matches. Amina Mukhametshina, Georgina Morral, Andrea Tomassone and Sandra Florez all posted singles wins. Florez and Evelyn Moreno posted a victory at No. 3 doubles.
 
The tournament is scheduled to conclude Saturday.
