LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Georgia pitcher Katie Shultes limited West Alabama batters to only two hits as the Wolves went on to win the Gulf South Conference softball series with a 6-1 victory in game three at the UWA Softball Complex on Sunday.
West Georgia ends its season 33-23 overall and 16-17 in the GSC, while West Alabama finishes 17-32 and 7-26. Neither team will qualify for the conference tournament.
"I've seen Shultes throw a lot of games in her career, but today was probably the best one I've seen," said UWA head coach
Will Atkinson. "She commanded the strike zone, but at times she was wild enough to keep us off balance. We just couldn't get into a groove at the plate."
The Wolves took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, scoring on two singles and a passed ball. They went on to build the lead to six runs with two runs on two singles in the fourth and a solo home run by Jordan Corbin in the fifth.
Shultes (12-6) held the Tigers hitless until the fifth inning when
Sarah Miles picked up a double. Shultes ended with the win in the circle with two strikeouts and seven walks.
Audrey Diekmann scored the lone run for UWA in the sixth off of a ground out by
Ashley Smart. Diekmann accounted for the other Tiger hit, going 1-for-3. Miles also finished 1-for-3.
"West Georgia has been a really good ball club this year," Atkinson said. "I really wanted to see if we could go out of here with a win, but we just left a bunch of runs on the field today."
Amanda Medders (4-14) started in the circle for the Tigers, but gave up three earned runs on nine hits through three and a half innings to take the loss.
Andrea Edmonds entered in the fourth, giving up one run on one hit.
"The cool thing is that we won't be freshmen next year," said Atkinson.
"We will have a lot of still-young people but with a lot of experience, and I think that will go a really long way for us. I hate to see the end of the season come and I hate it for the ones who are ending their careers like
Lacey Santiago and
Libby Davis. However, the future is bright and I look forward to the early part of August to seeing what we've got."
