Tiger Bats Heat Up in Double-Header Sweep at Tuskegee

TUSKEGEE, Ala. – West Alabama junior Ashley Stassin posted a double and a home run to lead the Tigers to a 7-3 victory over Tuskegee in game one, while Audrey Diekmann homered twice in game two on the way to the sweep with a 11-4 win in game two on Wednesday.

West Alabama improves to 16-24 overall, while Tuskegee drops to 10-27.

Stassin put the Tigers on the board early in game one with an RBI single that scored Diekmann in the top of the first. The Golden Tigers responded quickly as Jamaica Williams answered with an RBI on a ground out in the bottom of the inning.

In the third, Sharde Thomas scored on a UWA error to give Tuskegee the lead. Williams brought in another run, this time on a sac fly to put TU ahead 3-1.

Stassin and Kristen Bittle tallied doubles and a run each in the fourth inning, to tie the game 3-3. Late in the top of the seventh, the Tigers capitalized on another Tuskegee error to take a 4-3 lead before Ashley Stassin delivered the final blow with a three run homer.

Stassin finished game one 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs. Diekmann also added two runs, walking in two at-bats. Thomas led the Golden Tigers 2-for-4 with two runs.

Stassin (5-4) went on to pick up the win in the circle for the Tigers. She struck out four batters while allowing one earned run on six hits. Kaylin Finch (4-9) took the loss allowing two earned runs on seven hits. She struck out five.

Libby Davis put UWA on the board in the top of the second of game two, scoring on a fielder's choice off the bat of Kallie Klinger. Lacey Santiago singled in the same inning to add another run in Brittany Anderson.

The Tiger bats continued into the third as Diekmann hammered her first home run of the day for two runs and built the lead to 4-0. Brittany Anderson went on to add her first extra-base hit of the season in the same inning, belting a triple into left field before scoring on a wild pitch.

Tuskegee got on the board in the bottom of the third with an RBI single from Kenya Smith and a two RBI double by Ronesha Rudolph. Rudolph later scored on a UWA error to cut the Tigers lead to 5-4.

Stassin's success at the plate on the day continued in the fourth inning as she brought in two runs on a single to keep West Alabama ahead 7-4.

Diekmann homered for the second time in the sixth, again for two runs, to put the lead at 9-4. The shot gives her nine home runs on the year.

Late in the top of the seventh, the Tigers were not done yet. Ashlend Rodriguez scored two runs on a double to left field giving UWA the seven run lead.

Andrea Edmonds (8-6) took the win in the circle in game two. She struck out seven batters and allowed three earned runs on 11 hits through six innings. Morgan Burrell (0-3) picked up the loss, giving up five runs through three innings.

"We just went through the motions for a while there in the first game, but we were able to tie it up late and we got a couple of timely hits right when we needed them and helped push us over the top," said UWA head coach Will Atkinson.

"Stassin gave us a good opportunity but we just didn't take care of the softball. A few mistakes held us back, but good hits and good base running was key. In game two, I felt like we were able to continue with the offense a little bit. We were patient at the plate, took some walks, and squared it up. Audrey ran into a couple big ones, Ashlend Rodriguez hit a couple of deep balls that brought in some runs."

West Alabama Softball will return to Gulf South Conference action in a three game series against West Florida beginning in a double-header on Saturday. First pitch for game one is set for 1 p.m. in Pensacola, Fla.
