Tigers Open GSC Women’s Soccer Play with Win Over UWG

Box Score

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama opened Gulf South Conference play and snapped a two-match losing skid by defeating West Georgia, 2-1, Friday in women's soccer at Tiger Stadium.

West Alabama improved to 3-2 overall, 1-0 in GSC play. West Georgia is also 3-2 overall and 0-1 in league play.

"I am delighted to get that first conference win," UWA head coach Graeme Orr said. "The ladies showed great character."

West Alabama led 1-0 at the half, thanks to a goal by Katie Kolar in the 35th minute. West Georgia tied the match in the 48th minute on a goal by Susana Abundiz off an assist by Amia Canada.

It took the Tigers less than four minutes to net the game winner when TeMia Pride scored her third goal of the season late in the 51st minute to give West Alabama a lead it would not relinquish. Kolar's first-half goal was her first of the year.

"West Georgia is a tough team and beat us here in overtime last season, so for us to create a lot of goal scoring opportunities was really positive," Orr said. "This league is very tough and Sunday's game is massive now against a top Valdosta State squad. Now it's all about recovering and having energy Sunday."

West Alabama, who had 15 shots on goal against UWG, kicks off against Valdosta State Sunday at 1 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
