UWA Women Win Second Straight GSC Game, 71-62, Over Union

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Four West Alabama players scored in double figures to lead the Tigers to a 71-62 Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory over Union Saturday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

West Alabama won its second game in a row to improve to 6-12, 3-8 in the GSC. Union dropped to 9-9 and 4-8 while losing its third straight. The win over the Bulldogs was the first for UWA since Union began playing in the GSC five seasons ago.

Chloe Culpepper led the way for West Alabama with 14 points and nine rebounds.  Jenna Bradberry chipped in 12, while Ariel Wilson had 11 and Kierra Groce 10.

"Chloe had her best game of the year with a very strong presence underneath," UWA coach Rusty Cram said. "Also our two leading scorers combined for just 19 points and we end up scoring 71. This is the third game in a row our bench has been phenomenal."

The Tiger bench chipped in 28 points and West Alabama only trailed for 22 seconds in the game while leading by as many as 14 points with 9:49 to play.

"In addition to Chloe, I thought Fannasy Garrett-Hammett, Jenna Bradberry and Kierra Gross stepped up today," Cram said. "We are learning to play at the college level, and with the way things are stacked up in the middle of the standings, 10 wins could get you in the (GSC) tournament."

The Tigers held Union to just 31 percent (18-of-58) from the floor and the Lady Bulldogs managed to convert just 6-of-29 from behind the three-point line. West Alabama had a season-low eight turnovers and had 17 assists on 25 made baskets.

Bria Gaines had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Union. Jada Smith led all scorers with 18 points. Chelsea Bodiford chipped in 12 for the Lady Bulldogs.

West Alabama travels to West Florida on Thursday. The Tigers next home game is Saturday when Valdosta State visits Pruitt Hall.
