West Alabama Sweeps BSC In Tennis

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The West Alabama men and women's tennis teams both picked up wins at Birmingham Southern Saturday, with the men taking an 8-1 win and the Tiger women winning 7-2.

The West Alabama men (2-3) won two of three doubles matches, with Christopher Wood and Andrii Stratiienko taking No. 2, while Anton Lof and Nicolai Jochamowitz won at No. 3.

"The men really stepped up their level of competing from the Alcorn match the other day and it was great to see this raised level of focus," Tiger tennis coach Jeff Beaman said. "The women played well as a team. It was great to see Emylee (Tull) get her first college win in her first college doubles match."

The Tigers swept all six singles matches with Julius Kaverinen winning at No. 1, Honorio Fernandez at No. 2, Wood at No. 3, Stratiienko at No. 4, Lof at No. 5 and Jochamowitz at No. 6.

On the women's side, West Alabama (4-1) won for the fourth consecutive match. UWA won two of three doubles matches and five of six in singles.

Teona Tatishvili and Andrea Tomassone won at No. 2 doubles, while Amina Mukhametshina and Emylee Tull won at No. 3.

Mukhametshina, Evelyn Moreno, Tatishvili, Lilliana Araucz and Tomassone won singles 1 through 5, respectively.

The Tiger men open Gulf South Conference play at Alabama Huntsville Sunday, while the women open GSC play against UAH at home on Monday.
