Lady Choctaws Return the Favor, Prevent Series Sweep with Game 3 Win

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Mississippi College avenged a sweep in Saturday's double-header and a five-inning loss to West Alabama in Game 2, returning the favor with an 11-2 victory over the Tigers in Game 3 at the UWA Softball Complex on Sunday.

The Lady Choctaws improve to 9-8 overall, moving to 3-3 in the league. The Tigers fall to 9-8, dropping to 4-2 among GSC competition

"There's three aspects to this game – fielding, pitching and hitting," UWA head coach Carie Dever-Boaz said. "You have to do at least two of those well to compete, and quite frankly, we didn't do any of those very well today."

"This team is learning a lot and finding their character, and today really hurt." Dever-Boaz said. "But that's a good thing because seeing that hurt means we are progressing."

The tone was set in the top of the first as an illegal pitch gave MC's Tylan Buckley another opportunity at the plate. She did not waste it, launching the next pitch over the left centerfield fence for a two-out, solo shot to put the Lady Choctaws ahead 1-0.

The Tigers evened the score in the bottom half of the inning on a Lady Choctaw fielding error, allowing Sara Beth King to reach first and Ashley Stassin to touch home for an unearned run.

However, back-to-back big innings from Mississippi College ultimately prevented the series sweep. Kat Lee drove in two on a triple to center field, while a Tiger error allowed her to cross the plate, jumping the Lady Choctaws out to a 4-1 lead after two frames.

MC tacked on five more runs in the third thanks to two UWA errors and a pair of RBI singles from Alexia Harmon and Haley Thompson, extending the MC lead to 9-1 after three innings.

"Sometimes when it rains, it pours," Dever-Boaz said. "We missed a few calls here and there, but we should have made the basic plays."

West Alabama extended the game into the sixth as Audrey Diekmann advanced to third on a fielder's choice from Stassin, and crossed the plate on an MC fielding error to cut the deficit to 9-2.

Mississippi College sealed the GSC win, scoring two on an RBI double from Megan Everett and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Makenzie Nieto.

"We were picked to finish 10th in the conference, and both Delta State and Mississippi College are picked to be at the tournament in May," Dever-Boaz said. "Winning both of those series means we are farther ahead than everyone excepted us to be."

Harmon led the lady Choctaws at the plate, batting 1.000 in three appearances for a run-batted-in and two runs scored. Buckley went 2-for-3 with a home run while scoring two runs as well. Lee chipped in two RBIs, and Nieto and Thompson each tallied one RBI.

Diekmann paced the Tigers, batting .500 while scoring a run. Stassin crossed the plate once, and Lobitos tacked on the Tigers other hit.

"We just need to get back to work tomorrow," Dever-Boaz said. "Like I've said, our biggest enemy will always be ourselves, and today we shot ourselves in the foot."

"I felt like we took six steps forward this weekend and four back, but at the end of the day, we are still moving forward."

The Tigers will hit the rod on Tuesday, travelling to Montgomery, Alabama, for a non-conference double-header against the Warhawks of Auburn Montgomery. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
