Tiger Softball Completes Sweep of Lady Bucs with 9-1 Win in Game 3

LIVINGSTON, Ala.Audrey Diekmann knocked in three runs on four hits as West Alabama completed the series sweep of Christian Brothers with a 9-1 win in six innings at the UWA Softball Complex on Friday.

With the sweep, the Tigers improve to 12-13 on the season and 7-5 in the league. The Lady Buccaneers fall to 4-21 overall, dropping to 0-12 in conference action.

"I wouldn't call this a pretty win, but it's a quality win," UWA head softball coach Carie Dever-Boaz said. "Anytime you can sweep someone in the GSC, you have to take it."

"Bob (Andrea Edmonds) did not throw very well today," Dever-Boaz said. "I think she was tired from throwing so hard in a great pitching effort yesterday."

After Christian Brothers' first three batters reached on a pair of walks and a fielder's choice, West Alabama faced a no-out, bases-loaded situation in the top of the first inning.

As Julia Schassburger saw her pop-up fall to the ground in shallow left field in between three Tigers, Amber Johnson crossed the plate for an unearned run, placing the Lady Bucs in front 1-0 on the error.

"[Edmonds] was a little stiff, but she did what we needed her to do, and she really pulled the team out of that nasty first inning."

Edmonds wrung-up the next three CBU batters, ending the Buccaneer threat after allowing just one run to cross the plate.

With Jenna Goldsmith on second and Audrey Diekmann on third, Ashley Stassin laid down an infield grounder, reaching on a fielder's choice while Diekmann touched home to even the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the first.

The Tigers exploded for four runs on five hits in the second frame, starting with an RBI single from Diekmann. While Diekmann drew the Buccaneer defensive effort to second base, AC Storey stole home to put UWA ahead 3-1.

Goldsmith moved the score line to 4-1 on the next Tiger at-bat, placing a single up the middle to drive Diekmann around to score from third base. UWA widened the gap to 5-1 as Kierra Hague, who reached on a base-hit, took off to second, allowing Goldsmith to advance home on the defensive pickle.

West Alabama added a run in the fourth, moving ahead 6-1 as Diekmann scored Storey on a double to right center field.

UWA grabbed three unearned runs in the sixth frame, jumping out to an 8-1 lead as a Buccaneer throwing error allowed Bree Thompson to reach first while Ashlend Rodriguez and Brianna Buie crossed the plate. An RBI single from Diekmann on the ensuing at-bat secured the 9-1 victory, as well as the GSC series sweep.

"I don't think we did as good of a job base running or in our execution as we did yesterday," Dever-Boaz said. "One of the things we've talked about as a team is finding a way to be mentally there in Game 3 even when you're tired."

Diekmann paced the Tigers, batting 1.000 on the day with four hits and three runs-batted-in while scoring two herself. Goldsmith went 2-for-2 at the plate, knocking in a run while touching home once.

Ashley Smart, Hague, Rodriguez and Storey each chipped in a hit in the win. Lauren Provence recorded the only CBU hit of the day.

Edmonds (8-9) earns the win, striking out five batters while allowing just one hit in five complete innings. Sierra Anderson (0-6) takes the loss, getting pegged for nine hits while giving up five earned runs in 3.1 innings of work.

"We are really excited about getting a couple of days of rest before testing ourselves against Mississippi Valley on Tuesday," Dever-Boaz said. "I think it will be a win-win for us no matter what the outcome, and it will show us what we need to work on before we take on the defending national champions."

The Tigers will remain at home, facing off against Division I, Southwestern Athletic Conference-opponent Mississippi Valley State in a double header on Tuesday before traveling to Florence, Alabama, for a three-game, GSC series against No. 21 North Alabama.

First pitch for the double header against the Delta Devils is slated for 4 p.m. at the UWA Softball Complex.
