Chargers Complete GSC Series Sweep of Tiger Softball with Twin Bill Wins

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – No. 18 Alabama Huntsville spread 35 hits across 12 innings of play, completing the Gulf South Conference series sweep of West Alabama with 13-2 and 12-1 twin bill wins at the UWA Softball Complex on Saturday.

With the sweep, the Chargers (39-14, 24-9 GSC) clinched the No. 1 seed in the GSC Tournament set to get underway on Thursday. The Tigers end the 2017 season with a 21-31 overall mark and an 11-22 record in league play.

"We just ran out of gas," UWA head coach Carie Dever-Boaz said. "Anytime you have to throw a pitcher for almost 300 innings in a season, it is very tough to come out on top because other teams get a lot of looks and can start to dial in on you.

"The girls battled all season, and they never quit. If you look at the last game, it really came down to one big inning."

UAH struck first in the opener, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Tyler Harrison scored Kaityln Bannister, who reached on a fielder's choice one batter prior, on a single to center field.

The Tigers responded in the bottom of the frame, tying the contest at 1-1 thanks to an RBI double off the bat of Audrey Diekmann.

Harrison drove Bannister across the plate once again in the third for a 2-1 Charger advantage. Bannister extended the UAH lead to 4-1 in the fifth with a two-run homer over left field.

UWA cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the inning as Diekmann capitalized on a bases-loaded situation to record her second RBI of the game, scoring Allison Craft on a single to right field.

However, the Chargers would tack on three runs in the sixth and six more in the seventh en route to the 13-2 win in Game 1.

UAH scored in every inning in the series finale, starting off with an RBI double from Harrison in the top of the first to push Sarah Jordan home for a 1-0 lead.

Ashley Cornell widened the margin to 2-0 in the second, driving in Reagan Malone, who reached on a single and stole second base, with a one-bagger to right field.

Sarah Beth King halved the gap in the bottom of the inning, ripping a solo shot over left field for her eighth homer of the year.

The Chargers tacked on one run in the third before an offensive explosion in the fourth saw eight runs touch the plate on seven hits, culminated by a grand slam from Bannister.

An RBI single from Brooke Miller in the fifth capped the scoring on the day, pushing the score line to a final 12-1.

"The number one priority for me coming into this season was to change the culture of this team," Dever-Boaz said. "I think all of the girls embraced it, and really became a family."

"I think, you know, we've started to get people out here watching us now, and the community knows we are here to serve them with the product we put on the field."

Bannister led the Chargers at the plate, earning seven runs-batted-in on six hits. Malone and Harrison each tallied five hits in the double header, while Erin Jewell posted four.

Jada Hayes totaled three hits for UAH. Taylor Wascavage and Cornell each collected a pair of hits. Lexi Beach, Emily Glover and Jordan all tacked on one hit apiece.

Diekmann's two RBI led Tiger batters, while she and Ashley Smart each put down a pair of hits. Brianna Buie, Abby McKee, Craft and King each chipped in one hit for UWA.

Glover (16-5) earns the win in the opener, giving up one earned run on six hits through five innings in the circle. Harrison (18-7) earns the win in Game 2, allowing one run on three hits.

Andrea Edmonds (16-26) takes both losses on the day, getting pegged for 14 runs on 21 hits in a combined nine innings of work.

"There are a lot of could-haves, should-haves and would-haves, a lot of injuries and a lot of crazy things that happened this season," Dever-Boaz said. "Reflecting back on it, we could have just as easily made the [GSC] tournament."

"I think everybody is ready for a little rest before getting back to the grind. We're really excited about the girls coming in. We're going to have a completely new look next year, and I think we will give people a run for their money."
