UWA Men Snap Skid With 5-1 Victory at Lee

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – West Alabama snapped a seven-match losing skid with a 5-1 Gulf South Conference men's tennis victory over Lee University Friday at the Devos Tennis Center.
 
The 41st-ranked Tigers improved to 8-13 overall and 5-3 in GSC play. Lee, ranked No. 9 in the South Region, dropped to 9-4 and 4-3 while having a modest three-match winning streak broken.
 
"This was a good win for our men against a very strong Lee team," UWA coach Jeff Beaman said. "We need to carry this into our match against North Alabama this Sunday."
 
West Alabama won every doubles point before clinching the match with singles wins by Honorio Fernandez at No. 2 and Andrii Stratiienko at No. 3. Fernandez was a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 winner over Teodor Deljanovski, while Stratiienko defeated Jake Okines 6-4, 6-4.
 
Julius Kaverinen and Henrik Sinkko defeated Rhys Milne and Igor Shcattan, 8-5 at No. 1 doubles, while Stratiienko and Christopher Wood beat Jordan Knott and Boyd Blackburn, 9-8 (2), at No. 2. Fernandez and Anton Lof defeated Daniel Prata and Westley Lemke , 8-2, at NO. 3 doubles.
 
The Tigers close the regular season by hosting No. 37 North Alabama Sunday at the Vaughan Tennis Center on the UWA campus. First serve is set for 2 p.m. The GSC Tournament starts April 20 in Montgomery.
