LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Florida completed the Gulf South Conference series sweep of West Alabama, rapping out nine hits while capitalizing on five Tiger errors en route to an 8-1 collegiate softball victory at the UWA Softball Complex on Sunday.
The Argos (33-8, 17-7 GSC) continue their third-longest streak in program-history, clinching their 23
rd consecutive victory to share the conference's top spot with No. 23 Alabama Huntsville. The Tigers fall to 18-23, dropping to 10
th in the league with a 9-15 mark.
"You cannot start the game with an error on the first play, especially when you're struggling as a team, and not feel the wind come out of you," UWA head coach Dever-Boaz said. "We had more than enough opportunities offensively, but the bottom line is that we just aren't hitting."
"You can't have two hits in a game and expect do anything. It doesn't matter if our defense had done everything because we still would have lost the game."
After Jacey Castro reached third on a mishandled ball to lead-off the top of the first, Meghan Toney tripled on the next at-bat, pushing UWF out to an early 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Callan Taylor singled up the middle to drive Toney across the plate for a 2-0 Argo lead.
"We have to go back to being aggressive on the ball defensively," Dever-Boaz said. "We aren't playing the ball; it's playing us."
Three Tiger errors helped the Argos hang an unearned run on the board in the second frame before a UWA responded in the third.
Back-to-back West Florida errors allowed
AC Storey to reach second while
Audrey Diekmann reached first via the fielder's choice. A sacrifice bunt from
Jenna Goldsmith moved both runners into scoring position, setting up
Allison Craft for a one-run single on the next Tiger at-bat.
However, UWF extended its lead out to 6-1 in the top of the fourth, scoring three on four hits before picking up two more runs in the seventh to secure the 8-1 GSC victory.
Castro and Toney led the Argos with a pair of hits and one run-batted-in each. Taylor, Jacquelynne Poling, Tiona Hill, Rachel Wright and Sara Spears each chipped in a hit for UWF. Craft and
Sarah Beth King split a pair of hits for the Tigers.
Becca Taylor (19-5) earns the win, disallowing an earned run while striking out nine in her 13
th complete game of the year.
Andrea Edmonds (14-19) takes the loss, allowing four earned runs on nine hits and retiring four batters in her 16
th seven-inning game of the season.
"I thought Bob threw a great game today," Dever-Boaz said. "We've talked a lot about the mental aspect of a ball game as a pitcher, and it can be tough. I know she's mentally and physically exhausted; she's given us everything she's got this season, and she's done a tremendous job."
The Tigers will continue at home, facing off against Auburn Montgomery (18-15) in a non-conference double header on Wednesday. First pitch at the UWA Softball Complex is set for 2 p.m.
