Tiger Tennis Splits With UNA, Women Clinch No. 3 Seed in GSC Tournament

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The West Alabama women clinched the No. 3 seed in the 2017 Gulf South Conference Tournament by defeating North Alabama, 5-4, Sunday at the Vaughan Tennis Complex. The UNA men defeated the Tigers, 5-4.

The 22^nd-ranked UWA women fell behind 2-1 following the doubles competition, but rebounded to win four singles matches to take the match and keep regional tournament hopes afloat. The UWA women are 14-6 overall, 8-2 in GSC play. UNA, who has clinched a spot in the GSC Tournament but not a seeding position yet, dropped to 9-7 and 5-4.

"This was a big comeback win for the women against a tough UNA team," UWA coach Jeff Beaman said. "Liliana Araucz and Georgina Morral came up big with the match on the line. Georgina came back from being down 1-4 in the third set to clinch the deciding point for us."

Morral defeated Donna Haycock 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 at No. 4 singles. Araucz was a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 winner over Nele Seitz at No. 5. Amina Mukhametshina and Teona Tatishvili were singles winners for UWA at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.

Mukhametshina and Morral won UWA's only doubles point, 8-6, over Claudia Arroyo and Donna Haycock.

The 41^st ranked UWA men dropped to 8-14 overall, 5-4 in the GSC. No. 37 North Alabama improved to 12-4 and 6-2. Both UWA and UNA have clinched spots in the GSC Tournament, but a seeding yet.

The Lions won two doubles matches and then went on to take three straight singles courts to clinch the match at 5-1. West Alabama won the final three singles courts to cut the score to the final margin.

Honorio Fernandez and Anton Lof def. Gustavo Girao and George Markos, 8-1, in UWA's lone singles win at No. 3. Henrik Sinkko, Christopher Wood and Anton Lof took singles courts 4, 5 and 6, respectively.
