CLINTON, Miss. – Caitlin Hayes' first goal of the season was all Mississippi College would need to open Gulf South Conference women's soccer play with a 1-0 victory over West Alabama Friday at Longabaugh Field.
 
Hayes' goal, off an assist from Hannah Bailey, came at the 68:10 mark in a match where the Choctaws outshot the Tigers 14-12. UWA had seven shots on goal, MC six.
 
Mississippi College improved to 2-0-1 with the victory. West Alabama dropped to 1-2 after being shut out for the second time.
 
Choctaw goal keeper Andrea was perfect in net with seven saves. The Tigers' Jenni Aarniva had five.
 
Danielle Gibson and TeMia Pride both had four shots for West Alabama, with all of Gibson's being shots on goal. Hayes' game winner was one of four shots and her only shot on goal.
 
West Alabama remains on the road in GSC play, visiting Delta State at 2 p.m. Sunday. Mississippi College is host to Alabama Huntsville Sunday at 1 p.m.
