UWA Women Open GSC Tennis Play with Win

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's tennis team opened Gulf South Conference play by cruising past West Georgia, 9-0, Saturday at the Vaughan Tennis Complex.
 
The Tigers are now 2-1 overall, 1-0 in league play. West Georgia is 0-2 and 0-1.
 
"This was a strong win today," UWA coach Jeff Beaman said. "It was great to get Andrea (Tomassone) back for her first competition coming off major surgery this fall."
 
After winning all three doubles points, West Alabama won each singles match in straight sets, including a 6-0, 6-0 win by Tomassone over Meg Cummings at No. 6 singles. Katia De La Garza also recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 over Jordan England.
 
De La Garza and Georgina Salom defeated England and Brooke Kane at No. 1 doubles by an 8-3 score. Tomassone and Liliana Araucz beat Sara Watson and Shelby Brown, 8-4, at No. 2, while Evelyn Moreno and Julie Gonzalez-Rodriguez defeated Cummings and Gabby Chanthaphaeng, 8-0, at No. 3.
 
Rounding out singles wins were Gonzales-Rodriguez, Salom, Araucz and Mora at No. 2 through 5, respectively.
 
West Alabama is host to fifth-ranked West Florida in GSC play on Monday. West Georgia continues its road swing at Mississippi College Sunday.
