Tigers Sweep AUM in Tennis

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The West Alabama men and women's tennis teams each recorded victories over Gulf South Conference opponent Auburn-Montgomery Friday at the Vaughan Tennis Complex.

The UWA men (5-2, 2-1) defeated AUM (2-2, 2-1) by a 6-3 margin. The Warhawks are ranked No. 22 in the nation and seventh in the region. The Tiger women (3-2, 2-1) also beat AUM (2-2, 2-1), which finished the 2017 season ranked 19^th, by a score of 6-3.

"This was a strong win today for our men over a nationally ranked opponent," UWA head coach Jeff Beaman said. "It also was a great win for the women, finishing strong against a team that fought until the very end of the match. Both matches could have gone either way."

Julius Kaverinen and Andrii Stratiienko win in straight sets at No. 1 and No. 5 men's singles, respectively. Kaverinen and Linus Holthey were 8-3 winner at No. 1 doubles.

Katia De La Garza and Georgina Salom defeated Sofia Navarro and Alejandra Gil, 8-4, at No. 1 women's doubles. Evelyn Moreno and Julie Gonzalez-Rodriguez beat Julia Enderink and Alba De La Torre, 8-3, at No. 2 to give the Tigers the 2-1 advantage coming out of women's doubles.

De La Garza and Gonzalez-Rodriguez were straight set winners for West Alabama in women's singles.

Both the West Alabama men and women's teams travel to Mississippi College on Wednesday. Match time is 2 p.m.
