Stranded Runners Cost Tigers in Series Finale Against Lee

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The West Alabama Tigers hit well, but 13 stranded runners proved costly as the Lee Lady Flames used two big innings to claim a 6-3 victory in Gulf South Conference Softball action Saturday afternoon at Butler Field to cap the weekend series.

UWA falls to 5-12 overall and 2-4 in the GSC. Lee improves to 11-6 and 4-2 and claims the first weekend series.

Kylie Martin continued her impressive run to start GSC play with an RBI to drive in McKee in the top of the first. However, an error with the basses loaded allowed three Lee runners to score and take a 3-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning.

Lee extended that lead with three more runs in the bottom of the third, but the Tigers showed life in the third when Audrey Diekmann was walked with the bases loaded and then Savannah Smathers singled to score Olivia Dunlap who was pinch running to cut it to 6-3.

Smathers led UWA at the plate going 2 for 3 with the RBI in the fifth. Nicole Buccieri finshed 2 for 4 from the plate to wrap Tigers with multiple hits.

Kamree Lay (1-1) takes the loss despite only giving up one hit and no earned runs, but the freshman walked two batters and was in for the early error when Lee scored three runs.

Lee's Shonna Penney (4-3) gets the win with 4.1 innings and seven hits allowed. Leigh Beatenbough went 2.1 innings for her first save of the year.

UWA will have one more road trip before returning to the UWA Softball complex for a home series. On Wednesday, the Tigers head to Spring Hill to face the Badgers in Mobile, Ala. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. A link to live stats will be available on uwaathletics.com.
