Tigers collect two wins in second day of Gulf Coast Invitational

GULF SHORES, Ala. – The West Alabama Tigers started the day early, but the morning start time didn't result in a sluggish offense as collected two wins in the second day of the Gulf Coast Invitational.

With a 6-2 win over Rollins and a 14-0 win over Tuskegee, the Tigers improved to 3-1 to start the season.

West Alabama 6, Rollins 2

UWA defeated Rollins 6-2 after a strong outing from starting pitcher Carleigh Mills. Mills threw 5.0 innings, striking out one and allowing six hits. Andrea Edmonds closed out the game, pitching 2.0 innings and allowing two hits.

The Tigers scored one run in the second, three in the third, and two in the sixth to secure the victory. Freshman Nicole Bucierri led the offense, going 3 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs. Chrissy Tubbs went 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Audrey Diekmann went 1 for 2 with one RBI and two walks.

After allowing Rollins to get on the board in the sixth inning, UWA answered back with two more runs of their own to increase the lead.

Both teams committed an error. Rollins left seven runners on base while UWA left eight.

West Alabama 14, Tuskegee 0

The UWA offense came alive as Tigers took down Tuskegee 14-0 in four and half innings.

UWA's 14 runs came on 15 hits and three Tuskegee errors. Diekmann hit her first home run of the season. Chrissy Tubbs went 2 for 3 with three runs scored, Kendall Johnson went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and Kylie Martin went 2 for 2 with two RBIs.

Including the homerun, Diekmann went 1 for 2 with three RBI. Shay Shepherd, Ashley Smart, Kierra Hague, and Nicole Buccierri all had one RBI each as well.

Freshman Kamree Lay pitched 4.1 innings, allowing no runs on one hit. Lay struck out five through her innings of work. Nora Keehn closed out the game, pitching the final two outs and allowing no hits.

UWA will close out the Gulf Coast Invitational Sunday with games against Saint Leo University starting at 11:15 a.m. and against Young Harris College scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
