West Alabama Sweeps Shorter in GSC Tennis

ROME, Ga. – The West Alabama men and women's tennis teams traveled to Shorter on Sunday and swept the Hawks in Gulf South Conference matches, with the UWA women winning, 9-0, and the Tiger men notching a 7-2 victory at the Walt Attaway Tennis Complex.

The West Alabama women improved to 6-3 overall, 3-2 in GSC. The Tiger men are 8-3 and 4-1. The Shorter women are 3-4 and 1-2, while the Hawk men are 1-5 and 0-3.

The Tiger women defeated the Lady Hawks, 9-0, beginning with a sweep of the doubles courts. The Tigers allowed Shorter just three points over the three doubles matches, with Liliana Araucz and Andrea Tomassone, as well as Imperia Martinez Mora and Katie Burrall scoring 8-0 wins at No. 2 and 3, respectively.

The Tigers obviously swept all six singles matches, with Katia De La Garza winning at No. 1, Evelyn Moreno at No. 2, Tomassone at No. 3, Araucz at No. 4, Mora at No. 5 and Burrall at No. 6

Men beat Shorter 7-2. Shorter's only victories came at singles No. 1 and 4. The Tigers swept the three doubles matches with Julius Kaverinen and Linus Holthey winning 8-2 at No. 1, while Andrii Stratiienko and Henrik Sinkko won 8-2 at No. 2. Anton Lof and Erick Nordblom took No. 3 doubles by an 8-1 margin.

Holthey and Nordblom clinched the match for the Tigers with straight set victories at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively.

West Alabama's women are scheduled to play Arkansas Tech in Pensacola, Florida on Tuesday. The Tiger men and women are host to Montevallo in GSC matches on Wednesday. Shorter returns to GSC action Friday at Alabama-Huntsville.
