Tigers Sweep GSC Doubleheader with Lee

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Resilience was key for the West Alabama Softball team Monday as the Tigers battled with and eventually swept the visiting Lee Lady Flames in Gulf South Conference action at the UWA Softball Complex. UWA won the first contest 4-2 and the second, 5-4 in dramatic fashion.

The Tigers move to 9-7 overall and 3-2 in the GSC. Lee falls to 7-10 and 1-4 in the conference.

"It was a huge day for us to win both, we hit the ball really hard all day, Lee's defense was huge and made it really challenging," said Head coach Carie Dever-Boaz. "It was a total team success today. So many were called and ready all day"

In game one, home runs were the answer for the Tigers as Alli Craft hit a two-run homer in the second, drove in Lee Lee Parker and put the UWA 2-0 in one swing. Parker was pinch running for Mckinley Parris who reached on a walk.

Lee responded with a run each in the third and fourth inning to tie the contest 2-2.

West Alabama responded with a Nicole Buccieri homer to center field which brought in Kendall Johnson in the fifth to go up 4-2 for the final margin.

Nora Keehn (4-3) went the distance in the first game with three strikeouts and only one earned run.

The Tigers were on the prowl early in game two starting in the second inning. When Kacy Noland reached on an error by Lee's second baseman, Shay Shepherd and Jenna Goldsmith both scored. Shepherd pinch ran for Parris who reached on a walk. This followed by a Johnson single to bring in Noland, the Tigers held a 3-0 lead after two.

In the third, Parris an RBI single to center field to bring in Goldsmith to put UWA up 4-0.

However, Lee would not go quietly as Lady Flames scored two runs off a double in the fourth by Bailey Church and runs in the fifth and seventh to tie the contest at 4-4.

In the bottom of the seventh, Chrissy Tubbs hit a hard single to center field to bring in pinch runner Kierra Hague with two outs to lift West Alabama to the dramatic 5-4 final score.

Kacy Noland (3-2) pitched one inning for the win after she came in the seventh inning and sat down three straight batters. Keehn started the game and went four innings a strikeout and an earned run; Carleigh Mills got two innings of work with two strikeouts and an earned run; and Kamree Lay pitched an inning with a strikeout and one earned run.

West Alabama will hit the road for a few weeks starting with a trip to West Georgia for GSC Softball action on March 1 in Carrollton, Georgia. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. CST.
