Tigers Flash Power in Sweep of Spring Hill

LINVINGSTON, Ala.– The West Alabama Softball team continued the power surge from the weekend with six extra base hits, including three home runs, on the way to a doubleheader sweep against non-conference opponents Spring Hill Badgers Tuesday at the UWA Softball Complex.
 
UWA improves to 16-11 on the season while SHC falls to 11-13 overall.
 
Spring Hill struck first with runs off the bat of Hannah Fillmore who had an RBI double in the first and a solo home run in the fourth to put the Badgers up 2-0.
 
In the sixth, Alli Craft blasted a two-run shot that also brought in Kacy Noland to tie the game at 2-2 and force extra innings.
 
In the top of the eight, the Badgers took a 3-2 lead when Tiffany Fairchild scored on an error. 
 
UWA came back and won the game in the eighth when a Noland single scored Lee Lee Parker and a single to center by Hayes Fulford allowed Jenna Goldsmith to slide across home for the come from behind victory, 4-3.
 
Kamree Lay (2-2) picked up the win in relief after going 2.2 innings with a strikeout and no hits allowed. Nora Keehn pitched 5.1 innings with three strikeouts coupled with five hits and two 
 
Then in game two, the Badgers were on the board in the first once more with a home run by Delaney Thomas. 
 
The Tigers responded with seven straight runs starting with a solo homer by Kierra Hague in the bottom of the first. 
 
UWA then scored six runs in the second which started when Olivia Dunlap scoring as Noland reached on an error. During Hague's next at back, Noland and Kailey Hunt pulled a double steal which allowed Hunt to score. Hague then singled to center as Noland scored from second. A dropped ball in left during Craft's at-bat let Shay Shepherd and Hague come around to score. Grace Self capped the big inning a double to bring in Alli Craft and give UWA a 7-1 lead. 
 
Spring Hill added two in the fourth as Thomas and Fillmore both scored separate fielder's choices to make it 7-3.
 
The Tigers added a run in the bottom of the fourth with Hague's second home run of the game to put UWA up 8-3.
 
West Alabama came back with two more runs in the fifth when an error allowed Goldsmith to score and Kendall Johnson came in on a passed ball to go up 10-3 which held as the final.
 
Kat Burks (1-0) earned her first decision of the season and picked up the win in 3.1 innings of work with four strikeouts, two hits and three earned runs. Carleigh Mills pitched 3.2 innings in relief and only allowed a single hit. Mills struck out the side in the seventh to end the game.
 
Hague finished the day 4-for-7 with four RBIs and two homers.
 
The Tigers return to action Thursday against the Talladega College Tornadoes in the UWA Softball Complex. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
