Tigers Run Rule Union, Avoid Series Sweep

JACKSON, Tenn.– The West Alabama Softball team brought the bats with fire in them today as the Tigers defeated the Union Lady Bulldogs in six innings 9-1 in their Gulf South Conference series finale Monday afternoon at Fesmire Field.
 
UWA improves to 19-15 overall and 9-8 in the conference. Union falls to 24-15 on the season and 11-7 in league play.
 
Chrissy Tubbs roped a single to center as Alli Craft scored from second to put the Tigers up 1-0. Grace Self doubled to center which allowed Tubbs and Jenna Goldsmith to score. Kailey Hunt then stepped up and hit a blooper to left that let Self come home to give UWA an early 4-0 lead.
 
Kaitlyn Kelley responded for Union with a double to center for an RBI to make it 4-1 after an inning.
 
Then in the third, Hayes Fulford hit a sacrifice fly to right and Goldsmith tagged up from third to score. 
 
Self grabbed two more RBIs to go up to four on the day with a single to center as Tubbs and Craft scored to put UWA up 7-1 in the fourth. 
 
Craft got an RBI of her own in the fifth with a long single to center which let Lee Lee Parker stroll in from third base. 
 
Nicole Buccieri homered to left to put the Tigers up 9-1 in the top of the sixth which held as the Tigers invoked the mercy rule win in six innings. 
 
Nora Keehn (11-6) pitched the complete game with a pair of strikeouts and an earned run.
 
West Alabama will finally come off the road and head home for a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday against Columbus State. First pitch in the UWA Softball Complex is set for 3 p.m.
