Lynn Ends UWA Men’s Tennis Season with 4-1 Regional Win

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – After losing the doubles point, fourth-seeded Lynn roared back to win every finished singles match, scoring a 4-1 win over West Alabama in the opening round of the NCAA Division II South Region I Men's Tennis Tournament  Saturday at the Buccaneer Tennis Center.
 
Fourth-seeded Lynn (16-3) advances to play hosting and top-seed Barry (21-1) at 11 a.m. Sunday for the opportunity  to further advance. No. 5 seed West Alabama ends its season with a 16-7 record.

"We came out strong to win the doubles point, but Lynn is a tough and very talented team that stepped up and played some great singles," UWA head coach Jeff Beaman said. "I want to thank the men for the year we had."
 
With temperatures in the upper 80s and heat indexes well over the 90-degree mark, the doubles point and the early lead in the match came down to the No. 2 court where UWA's Henrik Sinkko and Ilari Vesanen outlasted Kay Bartmann and Patrick Bessinger for a 6-4 win and the point.
 
UWA's Julius Kaverinen and Linus Holthey won at No. 1 doubles, defeating Florian Clemares and Jose Porfirio 6-0. Lynn's Gabriel Hocevar and Lucca Baptista won on Court 3, 6-1, over Ilia Dehodiuk and Noah Johansen.
 
The Fighting Knights took no prisoners in singles, however. Bartmann helped swing the momentum in Lynn's direction by taking care of Julius Kaverinen 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1. Porfirio gave Lynn a lead it would not relinquish by winning 6-2, 6-2 over Holthey at No. 4 singles.
 
Baptista and Hocevar put the match away for the Fighting Knights with singles wins over Vesanen and Sinkko, respectively at No. 2 and 5. Baptista won 7-5, 6-2 and Hocevar 6-4, 6-2. Singles matches at No. 3 and 6 were unfinished.
