Tigers Take Advantage of Charger Miscues, Eliminate UAH

PENSACOLA, Fla.– The West Alabama Tigers took advantage of the opportunities given by the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers to come away with a 6-1 victory in an elimination contest in the Gulf South Conference Softball Championship Tournament Saturday evening at the UWF Softball Complex.

In the contest, UAH committed five errors including three in the first that allowed the Tigers to take an early lead. Meanwhile, the Chargers totaled nine hits and left eight runners on base.

West Alabama improves to 30-22 and reaches the 30-win mark for the first time since 2013.  Alabama Huntsville falls to 38-15 and will await the NCAA Selection Show to determine where and when the Chargers will play in the NCAA South Regional.

Kiara Akles started it for UAH with an RBI single to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead after a half inning of play.

UWA responded with a sacrifice fly from Nicole Buccieri to right to bring in Kacy Noland. Grace Self reached on an error that allowed Kierra Hague and Chrissy Tubbs to come in and score.

Self made things difficult again for the Charger defense as she reached on an error by the shortstop while Lee Lee Parker score from second.

Hague blasted a hit to right for a two RBI double to bring in Kendall Johnson and Haylie Best to put UWA up 6-1 before an eight-hour weather delay ensued. UAH went down in order to give UWA the win.

Nora Keehn (17-10) pitched 4.1 innings in relief to collect the win with two strikeouts and one hit allowed. Carleigh Mills started the game and went 2.2 innings with seven hits and one earned run.

West Alabama will have to avoid elimination one more time tonight 10:30 p.m. in a matchup against West Georgia. With two wins and no losses, the Wolves can't be eliminated tonight. UWG took two out of three games back on March 4 while the Tigers won the March 3 game 3- 1.
