Argos Down Tigers in GSC Tourney Finals

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – West Florida avenged its only regular season conference loss and upset top-seeded West Alabama, 4-1, to win the 2019 Gulf South Conference Women's Tennis Championship Tournament Saturday at Lagoon Park.
 
Ranked 13th nationally, the Argos improve to 20-9 and earn an automatic bid to the upcoming NCAA South Regional Tournament. The 17th Tigers drop to 18-5.
 
West Florida has now won nine straight matches and snapped UWA's winning streak at 15. The loss was the first for the Tigers since No. 3 Nova Southeastern beat UWA on March 9.
 
"This was a tough way to end up, but we can be proud of what we accomplished this year by winning the GSC regular season," UWA head coach Jeff Beaman said. "This team made history by being the first at UWA to go through a conference regular season unbeaten and the first to get to the GSC Tournament finals."
 
Hana Franco and Daryna Hukasian got the Tigers off on the right foot by winning at No. 3 doubles, but the Argos rallied to win at No 2, leaving it up to Berta Bonardi and Diana Vlad to clinch the point with a 6-3 win at No. 1 over Andrea Tomassone and Georgina Salom.
 
Vlad also clinched the overall match for West Florida, winning a tiebreak over Tomassone in the first set of No. 5 singles before storming through the second set 6-0. Franco, the GSC Freshman of the Year, was UWA's only singles winner, defeating Jennifer Rick 6-2, 6-4. The Tigers were ahead in two other matches when Vlad clinched the title for UWF.
 
West Alabama will wait against long odds for a spot in the South Regional Tournament. The field will be announced Tuesday night at 8 p.m.
