Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Union Hands Tigers Third Consecutive Loss, 85-71

JACKSON, Tenn. – The University of West Alabama women's basketball team hang tough in the second half, but early issues doomed the Tigers in an 85-71 loss to the Union Bulldogs Saturday afternoon in Gulf South Conference action in Fred DeLay Gymnasium.

UWA suffers a third straight loss to fall to 7-6 on the season and 3-5 in the conference. Union improved to 13-3 overall and 7-1 in the GSC.

"I couldn't have asked for a better effort from the team tonight. They got down early and didn't quit," said Head coach Rusty Cram. "The second quarter bit us in the butt when we had three key people on the bench with foul trouble. They exploited it and great teams do what it takes to win games."

With the foul trouble of the forwards, Bria Dent stepped up to have a career game with 28 points on 13-of-18 shooting and 17 rebounds. Both established new marks in Dent's Tiger tenure and marked the seventh double-double of the season for her.

"That's heart. That's just absolutely incredible," said Cram. "That wasn't against the last place team in the conference. It was against one the best if not the best teams in the league. Her effort was just absolutely incredible."

Naelyn Rios finished with 16 points, three assists, three rebounds and a steal while Tazsa Garrett-Hammett fought through the foul trouble to wind up with 11 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Union won both the first and second quarters 25-13 and 24-16 respectively before UWA won the third quarter 21-14. However, the Lady Bulldogs won the final period 22-21 to hold off West Alabama for the 85-71.

As a unit, the Tigers went 37.7 percent (29-for-77) from the floor, 17.6 (3-for-17) percent from three and 76.9 percent (10-of-13) from the free throw line.

Meanwhile, Union posted a 44.6 percent (29-for-65) field goal effort, 34.8 percent (8-for-23) from the three and despite having 31 free throw attempts the team went 61.3 percent (19-of-31) from the line.

Five Lady Bulldogs finished in double figures led by the 6-foot-2 center Jaelencia Williams who posted 23 points and 10 rebounds. Emily Beard scored 15, Jada Smith had 14 and both Shanique Lewis and Caroline Hogue had 10 points.

West Alabama will look to reverse the losing slide Thursday with a return to Pruitt Hall Gymnasium and a GSC matchup against the Alabama Huntsville Chargers (7-7, 4-4) who dropped a 70-47 decision to Lee earlier tonight.
Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. in Livingston with the game simulcast on ESPN 104.9 and Tiger TV-UWA Athletics YouTube Channel.
