Tigers Sweep Opening Day of 2020 Season

GULF SHORES, Ala. – The season started a day later than they wanted, but the result was still sweet as the University of West Alabama softball team swept its opening day of the 2020 Gulf South Conference Invitational with a thrilling 7-5 win over the University of Mobile and a wire to wire 4-2 win over Midwestern State all at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.
 
UWA 7, Mobile 5
The Tigers found themselves down early when Allison Vincent scored on a passed ball in the first for the Mobile Rams.
 
However, in the top of the fourth Grace Self put up the first two RBIs of the year with a double to center that brought in Lexy House and Hayes Fulford to put West Alabama up 2-1.
 
Mobile responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI from Vincent, two from Payton Adams on a single and capped by Katie Head reaching on a fielder's choice to score Taylor LeDrew.
 
Undeterred, the Tigers responded with five runs in the top of the sixth starting with a single from Kylie Martin with two RBIs to bring in Caleigh Wallace and Alli Craft. Martin later scored as Kendall Johnson reached on a fielder's choice for an RBI. Kierra Hague then blasted a two-run homer to give UWA the final 7-5 edge in the matchup.
 
Wallace (1-0) pitched 2.2 innings in relief to get the win and only allowed one run. Kamree Lay received the start and went 5.5 innings with a strikeout and four earned runs.
 
Hope Cain pitched all seven innings for Mobile and finished with four strikeouts while allowing seven hits and seven runs.
 
UWA 4, Midwestern State 2
Scoring was silent until the bottom of the third where Fulford singled to centerfield to score Lee Lee Parker. Martin grounded to second but got an RBI as Fulford came around to push the lead to 2-0. Peyton Coots scored after Haley Thorpe reached on an error for RBI to put UWA up 3-0.
 
MSU's two runs came in the top of the sixth with RBI singles from Bailey Wamsley and Ashley Turner which cut the lead to 3-2.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, Fulford shut the door on the Mustangs with a single to centerfield to score Chelsea Lobitos and secure the 4-2 victory for the Tigers.
 
Thorpe (1-0) got the start in the circle in went 4.0 innings in the win with a strikeout and three earned runs. Lay (1) earned the save in 1.2 innings of work with a strikeout and one hit allowed. Kat Burks pitched in middle relief going 1.1 innings and collecting a strikeout and allowing five hits.
For the Tigers, this is the first 2-0 start since the 2013 season which was the last time the program made the NCAA South Regional Tournament.
 
West Alabama wraps the Gulf Coast Invitational tomorrow with matchups against #16 North Georgia at 11:30 a.m. and then against Rollins College at 2 p.m.
