Tigers Fall in Battle with FT

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The end of the Florida Tech Invitational for the University of West Alabama softball team featured plenty of offense, but the Tigers fell to the Florida Tech Panthers 6-5 Sunday morning at Pride Stadium at USSSA Space Coast Complex to conclude the trip.

Both teams combined for 17 hits in the 11 run scored affair.

UWA (3-6) scored first in the back and forth affair with an RBI single from Chrissy Tubbs that allowed Abby McKee to cross the plate to put UWA 1-0 after the first.

The Panthers (1-7) posted two runs in the bottom of the second when Mikayla Wessel and Ashley Campbell scored on an error to give FT its first lead of the day.

In the top of the fourth, Haylie Best scored on an error by the second baseman to tie the contest at 2-2.

However, the tie didn't last long as in the bottom of the inning Cheyenne Nelson smashed an RBI double to center to give Florida Tech a 3-2 lead.

The Tigers regained the lead in the fifth when Tubbs got her second RBI of the day with a single to score McKee. Caleigh Wallace followed with a two RBI single to bring in Hayes Fulford and Tubbs as UWA took a 5-3 lead.

Florida Tech went on to score a run in the bottom of the next three consecutive innings with an RBI from Victoria Szrom in the fifth, Jaden Kline RBI in the sixth and Szrom once more in the seventh in walk off fashion to give the Panthers a 6-5 comeback victory.

UWA tied a season high in stolen bases with Kierra Hague, Tubbs, McKee and Fulford all committing one swipe.

Caleigh Wallace (1-2) started in the circle but came back to pitch in the seventh inning to receive the loss. She went 3.1 innings with a strikeout, six hits, two walks and three earned runs. Kamree Lay pitched 3.0 innings with a strikeout, five hits, two walks and three earned runs.

Tina Velazquez (1-2) got the win in relief in 3.2 innings of work with a strikeout, five hits and three earned runs. Jordan Lawlis started and went 3.1 innings with two strikeouts along with four walks, three hits and an earned run.

West Alabama is on the road one more weekend, but this time it'll be to start Gulf South Conference play in Clinton, Mississippi against the Mississippi College Choctaws. The series is set to start 6 p.m. Friday. Game links are on uwaathletics.com.
