Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Tigers Shutout Shorter 4-0 on Senior Day

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - It was a dominating performance by UWA's women's soccer team on Senior Day.  The Tigers shutout Shorter University 4-0 in a Gulf South Conference matchup Sunday afternoon at Tiger Stadium. 

"Today is all about getting points for the seniors," UWA head coach Graeme Orr said. "It is almost impossible to encapsulate what this group means to every one of us at UWA. They have embodied everything that a Tiger should be, and I am very proud of them all."

UWA improved its overall record to 8-5-2 and is now 6-4-1 in GSC play. Shorter dropped to 2-13 overall and is now 1-11 in the conference.  

The Tigers jumped to a 1-0 lead when Mikayla Anderson kicked it past the Hawks' goalkeeper off an assist from Kaylah Butterworth at the 2:37 mark. This is Anderson's second goal of the 2021 season. 

Anele Komani scored the second goal of the match off an assist from Kya Davis in the 35th minute to give the Tigers a 2-0 advantage over the Hawks. 

Paige Laidler's header in the 39th minute was the third goal of the match for the Tigers. Kaylah Butterworth assisted Laidler's goal to improve UWA's lead to 3-0 before heading into halftime.

Coming out of the half, UWA stayed strong and kept firing off shots. Another header from Laidler closed out the match to claim the 4-0 victory over Shorter. Komani assisted Laidler's goal in the 56th minute. 


Between the posts for the Tigers was Tabitha Weldon. Weldon improved her record to 7-5-2 and kept the clean sheet in the victory. The goalie recorded one save as she faced three shots in her 90 minutes of action. 


UWA fired off 33 shots, with 12 being on target. Shorter took three shots, one being on target. 

One yellow card and 17 fouls were called in the physical contest. Shorter was called for nine fouls, while West Alabama was called for eight.

The seniors that were honored during today's match were Madison Barbara, Kaylah Butterworth, Lucy CritchellKya Davis, Brianna Forrest, Allison Garrity, Nikol Gonzalez, Anele Komani, Kennedy McNab, Megan Ongteco, Megan Wintermeier, and Tabitha Weldon

The Tigers return to action Thursday, Nov. 4, to play in their last regular-season match against Alabama Huntsville. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m at Charger Park in Huntsville, Alabama.
