Tigers Take Down Florida Tech 85-75 at South Region Crossover Classic

TAMPA, Fla. - West Alabama women's basketball team closed out the two-day South Region Crossover Classic tournament with a 85-71 win over Florida Tech Saturday afternoon at the Bob Martinez Athletics Center. 

"Very proud of the way the ladies bounced back," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "It was a great win on the road."

With the win, the Tigers improved to 1-1 on the season, while the Panthers dropped to 1-1.

Bria Dent's double-double led the Tigers' offense. The Birmingham, Alabama native scored 20 points, going 6-for-15 from the field and 8-for-9 from the free-throw line, while collecting 14 rebounds. Tazsa Garrett-Hammett also had a double-double. The LaGrange, Georgia native added 17 points and collected 10 rebounds. Naelyn Rios chipped in 13 points, five rebounds, and four assists. 

In the first quarter, Rios struck first for the Tigers, making a layup to give UWA a 2-0 advantage. The Panthers then went on a 14-2 run before the Tigers battled back and ended the first quarter scoring eight points to cut Florida Tech's lead 14-12. 

UWA outscored Florida Tech 21-18 in the second quarter. With 5:47 remaining, Garrett-Hammett's layup brought the game to a 21-21 tie. Jada Golden's three-pointer with 3:27 left, pushed the Tigers over the Spartans to take the 24-21 lead. Zoe Watts knocked down one free throw with 2:43 remaining, followed by two more free throws 30 seconds later to gain the 27-24 advantage. 

The Panthers went on a 8-6 run with the Tigers leading 33-32 going into the half. 

Coming back from the break, Florida Tech added five points with a layup and three-pointer to take the 37-32 lead. The Tigers battle back with a 9-2 run to regain the advantage bringing the score to 44-39. 

UWA went on an 11-5 run to close out the third quarter. Jala Williams, Watts, and Dent all made layups. Garrett-Hammett sank her two free-throws. Dent added another layup along with another Garret-Hammett free throw to close out the third quarter with the Tigers leading 55-44. 

The Tigers outscored the Panthers 23-13 in the fourth quarter. Florida Tech scored six points off two three-pointers to start the quarter. UWA sank 12 free throws, three layups, and three jumpers in the fourth to close out the game with a 85-75 win over the Spartans. 

West Alabama hit 22-of-50 (44%) from the floor, including 4-of-11(36%) from behind the arc. The Tigers scored 32 points in the paint and 23 points off of the Panthers turnovers. 

UWA opens up at home Tuesday, Nov. 16 against Oakwood College. The Tigers tip-off at 5 p.m. in Pruitt Hall.
