Women’s Basketball Opens Up GSC Play in Mississippi

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama women's basketball opens up Gulf South Conference play in a two-game road series in Mississippi. 

The Tigers open up GSC play against Mississippi College on Thursday, December 2. Tip-off time is set for 5:30 p.m. at A.E. Wood Coliseum in Clinton, Mississippi. UWA then heads to Cleveland, Mississippi to take on Delta State Saturday, December 2, with a tip-off time at 2 p.m.

UWA heads into the weekend with a 5-1 record. The Tigers defeated Spring Hill College 74-49 Tuesday, Nov. 23 to win their fifth consecutive game. 

Junior Bria Dent is averaging 15.8 points per game and is shooting .551 from the field. The Biringham, Alabama native is also leading in rebounds, averaging nine a game. 

Junior guard Jala Williams leads the team in assists and has dished out 23, while sophomore guard Naelyn Rios sits right behind her with 20 assists. Also, Dent is leading in steals. The junior guard has made 16 steals, while Williams follows with 13. 

Mississippi College is also 4-2 on the season. MC's last game was against Tougallo on November 29. The Choctaws took a 58-50 defeat from the Bulldogs. 

Kyiah Julian leads the Choctaws with 11.6 points per game, while Amelia Bell leads the team in rebounds, averaging 7.2 a game. 

Tickets are required for the game against Mississippi College. Tickets can be purchased here or at the gym. General admission is $12 a person. Kids five and under get in free. Doors open one hour prior to the contest. 

Masks are not required but are recommended. Physical distancing will be encouraged in all venues, and spectators will have access to hand sanitizing stations throughout the Coliseum.

Delta State heads into the weekend with a 2-3 record. The Statesmen host two teams for the opening week of GSC play. Before battling the Tigers, DSU takes on Alabama Huntsville Thursday, Dec. 2 in Walter Sillers Coliseum in Cleveland, Mississippi. 

Zyarie Ewing is averaging 14.8 points per game for Delta State. Chrystal Mayes leads in rebounds, averaging 10.2 a game.
