ALBERTVILLE, Ala.- West Alabama defeated Union and No. 6 Young Harris at the Hail Mary Mini Classic Friday. The victory over both teams improved West Alabama to 4-2.
Game 1
The Tigers snagged a late lead and defeated the Bulldogs 8-3. LP Trammell went 2-for-2 from the plate to lead the Tigers.
West Alabama got on the scoreboard in the first inning when bases were loaded and Kylie Martin walked, chasing Kacy Noland across the plate.
In the bottom of the fourth, Nolands' sacrifice fly allowed Lexy House to score.
The game was tied with UWA batting at the bottom of the fifth. Trammell hit a home run on a 1-1 count, driving in four runs. Trammell collected two hits and drove in four runs,s tretching the Tigers lead to 7-3.
UWA closed out the game with Grace Self sacrifice fly driving in Hannah Mynard for the final margin.
Game 2
UWA defeated No. 6 Young Harris, 7-4, after taking the lead late in the game.
Kamree Lay pitched five innings, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out two.
Mary Grace Sheffield led UWA with three hits in three at bats.
Chrissy Tubbs reached on a fielder's choice scoring Morgan Windham to make the score 3-2.
With the game tied at four in the top of the seventh, House singled in Sheffield. Tubbs' sacrifice fly chased House. Nicole Buccieri's base hit to right field drove in two runs.
West Alabama hits the road for a three-game Gulf South Conference series at West Florida next weekend starting Friday. The Tigers and Argonauts play a single game Friday at 6 p.m., followed by a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
