Tigers Earn First Win at UM

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of West Alabama men's tennis team earned its first win of the spring season by defeating Montevallo, 4-3, in a Gulf South Conference match Wednesday at the Tennis Court Complex.
 
The victory improved 20th-ranked West Alabama to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in GSC play. The match was the season opener for Montevallo.
 
"This was a tough match that went down to the wire," UWA head coach Jeff Beaman said. "These kind of battles make you tougher and it is nice to come out on top."
 
Christopher Bulus and Ilari Vesanen won at No. 1 doubles, while Nuutti Jokinen and Noah Johansen were winners at No. 3 to give the Tigers the doubles point.
 
Bulus was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Philippe Zehender at No. 1 singles, while Ilia Dehodiuk and Anton Lof were winners at No. 3 and 6 singles, respectively. Dehodiuk defeated Daniel Del Val 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 and Lof was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Jules Dugue.
 
West Alabama plays its final exhibition of the season Sunday at NCAA Division I Jacksonville State (5-1). Montevallo plays Tuskegee (3-4) in a neutral site match in Montgomery on Friday.
