MONTEVALLO, Ala.- West Alabama held a 5-4 lead late in the game, but Montevallo scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the 7-5 win at Orr Park on Friday night.
"The team competed hard tonight so to come up short was heart breaking," UWA head coach Carie Dever-Boaz said. "We left to many runners on and made a few huge defensive mistakes that cost us about four runs. That is the difference in the ball game, but we are back at it tomorrow on this special Easter weekend."
The Falcons improved to 11-14 and 6-9 in GSC play. The Tigers dropped to 11-15 overall, 7-12 in the conference.
UWA opened the game with a run to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Kendall Johnson hit a RBI double to score Abby McKee. Montevallo took a 2-1 lead after one inning and scored two more runs in the second for a 4-1 Falcon lead.
In the third, left fielder Chrissy Tubbs made a diving catch to keep the Falcon hitter from extra bases and the Tigers defense kept Montevallo off the scoreboard.
LP Trammell ripped a two-run homer over the right field fence to narrow the Falcons lead at 4-3 in the top of the fourth.
In the fifth, Kacy Noland RBI single scored Morgan Windham to tie the game at 4-4.
West Alabama took a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth when Tubbs RBI single scored Kelsie Gilliam.
Montevallo scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 7-5 final margin.
