James Signs with UWA Women’s Hoops

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's basketball team has added some defensive and shooting depth of the perimeter as Payton James has signed her National Letter of Intent to join the Tigers next season.

James, a 5-foot-6 guard, will join the Tigers as a freshman after being awarded another season of eligibility due to COVID-19 protocols after spending a year at Dodge City Community College.

In her injury shortened season for the Lady Conquistadors, James produced two double-digit performances including 17 points while shooting 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, three assists, a steal and rebound in the game proceeding the season ending injury. She went for 11 points, four rebounds, a steal and a block against Cowley College on Feb. 13.

In all, James averaged 4.6 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.4 steals in her shorted season.

A native of Sulphur, Oklahoma, the guard produced a strong senior season for Sulphur High School as she guided the Lady Bulldogs to a 24-5 record. She finished the year with 182 points, shot 37% from 3-point range and had 76 total rebounds, 64 steals and 73 assists.

James is the second signing for the 2021-2022 season as she joins Mia McCarthy in the class. McCarthy signed with UWA back in November.
