Women’s Soccer Clinched a Home Game in the GSC Championship Tournament

ROME, Ga. - West Alabama women's soccer defeated Shorter 3-1 to wrap up the 2022 regular season Sunday afternoon at Ben Brady Field. The Tigers finished as the No. 3 seed and clinched a home game in the Gulf South Conference Championship Tournament. 

The Tigers ended the season with a 10-5-1 overall record and are now 9-3-1 in GSC play. UWA held a perfect 7-0 home record and went  2-5-1 on the road. The Hawks dropped to 0-17-1 and are now 0-13 in the conference. 

The first goal came within the first 10 minutes of the game. Camilla Bedin found the back of the net off an assist from Emily Djagbare to take the 1-0 lead heading into the half. 

Coming out of halftime, the Tigers scored two back-to-back goals. The first goal came from Saylor Richard at the 66:03 mark. Anna Dickov knocked in the third goal a minute later to gain the 3-0 advantage. 

The Hawks responded with a goal from Juliana Torres at the 68.46 mark to trim the Tigers lead. UWA held onto the lead and closed out the game with a 3-1 win over the Hawks. 

The Tigers out shot the Hawks, 21-2. UWA also held the advantage in corner kicks, 13-0. There were 15 fouls called in the matchup. UWA was called for 12, while Shorter was called for three. 

Paige Laidler took six shots with four being on goal and played 90 minutes. Selis Demirci, Aileen Charles, and Summer Fox all took two shots. 

Shorter's forward Torres took two shots and scored the only goal for the Hawks. 

The Tigers open up the GSC Championship Tournament on Sunday and host Delta State. A time will be announced at a later date.
