MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The West Alabama women's soccer team was able to keep their two-point lead on Montevallo in the Gulf South Conference standings after the teams battled to a 0-0 draw on Sunday afternoon.
With results from Sunday, UWA remains tied for third in the GSC standings with Mississippi College with both teams sitting at 19 points. Montevallo remains in fifth with 17 points.
Maria Mon was big in net as she turned away eight shots on goal to record the shutout. Montevallo (9-2-2, 5-2-2 GSC) took 14 total shots, with eight on goal. UWA (7-4-1, 6-2-1 GSC) was able to get three shots off, with two landing on goal.
The Falcons held a slight 5-3 edge in corner kicks and the teams combined for 17 fouls, with 10 whistled on Montevallo.
The Tigers generated the first shot of the game in the 13th minute when Kaylee Rivas fired a shot on goal that was saved. After Mon made a save a few minutes later, Brodie Clark tallied another shot on goal for UWA when her shot was saved in the 37th minute.
Mon was big down the stretch in the closing minutes of the opening half, she made three saves to keep the game scoreless.
One of the biggest saves of the game for Mon came in the 50th minute. After the Tigers were whistled for a foul in the box, the ensuing penalty kick was saved by Mon to keep the game scoreless.
Montevallo made one more push getting another shot on goal in the 74th minute and then another in the 82nd minute, but again Mon was there to preserve the shutout and keep the game tied.
It was a season-high in saves for Mon with the eight stops, as she tallied her second solo shutout and has two other combined shutouts on the year. Emily Djagbare, Paige Laidler, Lucy Horn, Sierra O'Grady, Mon and Saylor Richard played all 90 minutes.
Espy Sanchez led the Falcons with four shots (two on goal). Skylar Bennett added three shots (two on goal). In net, Jolie Cazale recorded the shutout with two saves.
UWA will look to continue their unbeaten ways when they host Valdosta State this coming Friday at 5 p.m.
