Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Mon and Horn Named to GSC All-Tournament Team

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - West Alabama women's soccer goalie Maria Mon and defender Lucy Horn have been named to the 2022 Gulf South Conference All-Tournament team.

"First, any of my players could have been selected for the All-Tournament team because we were outstanding in the playoffs," head coach Graeme Orr said. "I let our team decide, and they picked Lucy and Mon."

Mon, a Leon, Spain native, recorded a season-high of nine saves in the matchup against Mississippi College in semifinals of the GSC Championship Tournament.

The senior goalie, Mon, is third on the team in minutes played with 1594 and has had 11 wins in goal this season. Mon has made 83 saves and holds an 81.4 save percentage. Mon is ranked fourth in the GSC in saves. She had four solo shutouts this season and two combined shutouts.

"It has been a tremendous pleasure to work with such a talented goalkeeper with the highest level of professionalism," Orr said. "She conducts herself in a proper way every day. She's a top student-athlete and citizen."

"Mon can create energy for the team and spark others to perform with massive saves," Orr said. "I have no doubt she will continue to play at a high level after UWA because of her mentality."

Horn, a Penicuik, Scotland native, played 103 minutes in the matchup against Mississippi College in semifinals and held the Choctaws' offense, sending both teams into double overtime and penalty kicks of the GSC Championship Tournament.

The junior defender, Horn, logged 1607 minutes and started in 18 games this season. The back line has been strong and consistent this season with the help of Horn.

"Lucy is one of the most resilient players I have coached," Orr said. "In the quarterfinals, her consistency in attacking the ball was outstanding. She is still a young player with great potential at UWA."

"Just wanted to finish showing my gratitude to all players, coaches, and administration at West Alabama," Orr said. "Thank you for all the support this season."
