Tigers Take Two from Christian Brothers

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - West Alabama softball team claimed the doubleheader sweep over Christian Brothers in a Gulf South Conference matchup Saturday evening at Bland Field. The Tigers downed the Bucs 16-10 in game one and won game two 10-5.  

With the wins, the Tigers improved to 14-12 overall and are now 6-5 in GSC play. The Bucs fell to 7-20 overall and are now 1-11 in the conference.

Game One
The Tigers used 10 hits to score 16 runs against Christian Brothers in game one of the doubleheader compared to the Bucs 10. 

Kacy Noland led the Tigers from the plate. The Carrolloton, Ala. native went 3-for-4. She collected three RBIs and scored three runs. 

Cassie Matlock had two hits out of the Tigers 10. Matlock and Taylor Clegg both collected three RBIs. 

In the first inning, UWA had a single from Noland and a double from Matlock to bring a total of three Tigers across the plate to start UWA off with a 3-0 lead.  

Noland started things off in the fourth inning with a double, driving in Kendall Johnson. Matlock also doubled, bringing Noland across the plate to improve the lead to 5-0.

Christian Brothers tied the game at 5-5 when the Bucs pushed five runs across the plate in the fifth inning. 

The Tigers scored six runs in the sixth inning. Noland had the only hit of the inning when she singled up the middle, bringing Karly McDaniel across the plate. McDaniel pinch ran for Grace Self

Three of the other runs scored in the sixth inning were scored when bases were loaded and UWA was hit by a pitch twice and Clegg was walked once. Two more runs were scored off a wild pitch. The six runs improved the Tigers lead to 11-5. 

CBU trimmed the lead in the bottom of the sixth to 11-10. The Tigers added five more runs in the seventh inning to improve the lead to 16-10. The Tigers held off the Bucs in the bottom of the seventh to claim the 16-10 win over Christian Brothers. 

Hannah Mynard (7-3) claimed the win for the Tigers. She gave up three earned runs off of seven hits, stuck out one, and walked seven over 5.2 innings. Breanna Fortenberry worked 1.1 innings in relief for her first save, allowing just one hit.

CBU pitcher Olivia Renta claimed the loss for the Bucs. She gave up five earned runs, struck out two, and walked three over two innings.

Game Two
West Alabama defeated Christian Brothers 10-5 in game two of the doubleheader. 

Cassie Matlock and Lexy House went 2-for-4 from the plate and scored one run. Matlock and Kendall Johnson collected two RBIs. Hannah Mynard added three RBIs and went 1-for-2 at the plate.

In the first inning, Kacy Noland scored on a CBU error to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. 

The Tigers stayed strong in the second inning, improving the lead to 3-0 when Matlock singled, scoring Johnson and Lexy House.

CBU trimmed the lead when first baseman RJ Simpson homered to right center.

LP Trammell scored on a CBU fielding error bringing Kelsie Gilliam across the plate too, improving the lead to 5-1. Gilliam pinch ran for Peyton Coots

The Bucs drilled two back-to-back homeruns in the bottom of the third inning, cutting the Tigers lead to 5-3. CBU pushed two more runs across the plate in the fourth inning to bring the game to a 5-5 tie. 

Trammell started the fifth inning with a home run, having the only hit of the inning to take the lead back, 6-5.

Mynard hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning driving in Matlock and Mary Grace Sheffield, extending the lead to 9-5. Sheffield pinch ran for Nicole Buccieri

Kailey Hunt reached on a fielder's choice then advanced to second on the CBU shortstop error. Noland scored on the error to round out the Tigers' scoring and claim the doubleheader sweep 10-5. 

Breanna Fortenberry (1-0) claimed the win for the Tigers. She did not give up any earned runs and struck out two over four innings. 

CBU pitcher Mackenzie Puckett (4-5) claimed the loss for the Bucs. She gave up six earned runs, struck out two, and walked five over 5.1 innings of work.

The Tigers return to action Sunday at noon to close the three-game GSC series against Christian Brothers with a single game.
