UWA Softball Drops GSC Series to UAH

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - West Alabama softball team lost 9-1 in the final Gulf South Conference game of the series against Alabama Huntsville at Charger Park on Sunday to clinch the No. 7 seed in the GSC Championship Tournament.

The Tigers ended the regular season with a 26-23 overall record and went 15-15 in GSC play. The Chargers improved to 35-14 overall and are 21-9 in the conference. 

Nicole Buccieri tallied two hits for the Tigers. Cassie Matlock and LP Trammell also collected a hit. 

The Chargers put three runs on the scoreboard in the third inning, added one in the fourth and fifth, and closed out the sixth by pushing four batters across the plate to combine for a total of nine runs. 

UWA's only run of the game came in the sixth inning when Kacy Noland grounded out to third base, scoring Matlock. 

Kaeleigh Crutchfield (6-7) absorbed the loss for the Tigers. She scattered five hits, giving up seven earned runs while striking out two and walking three over 5.1 innings of work. 

Layton Murphy (15-7)  claimed the win for the Chargers. She gave up one earned run on four hits and struck out four over six innings of work. 

UAH's outfielder Shelby Brooker went 2-for-4 from the plate. She collected an RBI and scored one run in the matchup.

Up next for the Tigers is the GSC Championship Tournament in Oxford, Alabama. The Tigers enter the tournament as the No.7 seed and battle No. 2 seed Valdosta State on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 12:30 p.m. at Choccolocco Park
