Softball’s Season Ends in Double-Elimination Game Against AUM

OXFORD, Ala. -  West Alabama softball team battled hard but fell short 7-3 in the second game against the No. 1 seed Auburn Montgomery at the Gulf South Conference Championship Tournament Saturday evening at Choccolocco Park. 

With the two losses to AUM, the Tigers have been eliminated from the tournament as they finish their season with 28-25 overall record. 

"This was an incredible season," UWA head coach Stephanie Defeo said. "I am so proud of our team, especially the seniors. They bought in and set the tone for a new path for this program. We are very excited about the future."

Kelsie Gilliam and Cassie Matlock tallied two hits. Matlock added a double. Gilliam stole two bases and collected an RBI. Kacy Noland and Taylor Clegg also had a hit. The Warhawks recorded eight hits with six batters walked and three batters hit by pitch. 

AUM's pitcher Avery Dickerson earned the win to improve to 9-1 on the season. She scattered four hits, did not allow any earned runs, struck out two and walked two over seven innings. 

Kacy Noland (5-9) was tagged with the loss. She allowed five earned runs on eight hits, and walked six over six innings of work. Kaeleigh Crutchfield pitched the final inning.

AUM jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when the Warhawks scored on two UWA fielding errors. The Tigers answered in the bottom of  the inning when Gilliam singled on a bunt, scoring Matlock. Gilliam was brought home when Noland reached on a fielder's choice, giving UWA a 2-1 lead.  

Auburn Montgomery had a big third inning when two batters each hit a home run. AUM pushed two more runs across the plate in the fifth inning, giving the Warhawks a 5-2 lead. 

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Noland singled bringing Gilliam across the plate to cut the Warhawks lead to 5-3. AUM scored two more runs in the seventh inning, one being a home run to claim the 7-3 victory over the Tigers and advance to the championship game. The Warhawks take on Alabama Huntsville Sunday at 10 a.m. at Choccolocco Park.
