Women's Soccer Falls to Montevallo 3-2 in GSC Semis

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.- The University of West Alabama women's soccer team was defeated by the University of Montevallo in a 3-2 shootout in the GSC Semifinals at John Hunt Park in Huntsville.  

Montevallo got on the board early, with a goal from Angelina Rivas to give the Falcons the early advantage. The Tigers Venla Makela answered in the 33rd minute with her own chip shot off an assist Paige Laidler, taking a 1-1 tie into the half.  

Emily Callahan poured on in for West Alabama to give them the lead over the Falcons in the 57th minute, courtesy of Emily Callahan off an assist from Paige Laidler. Montevallo pulled the momentum back over to the purple and gold in the 63rd minute courtesy of a goal from Morgan Goehrig, tying up the match 2-2.  

2nd Team All-GSC selection Kaeri Ward scored the game winning goal for the Falcons in the 71st minute unassisted, giving The Falcons the late advantage.  

The Tigers had a late opportunity to tie in the 89th minute on a shot from Emily Djagbare, but it hung wide left.  

The Tigers will finish the season with a 7-9-2 record in Sam Wilson's first year at the helm, along with a historic win in the GSC Quarterfinals as the Tigers defeated the number one seed West Florida Argos, become the first eight seed in GSC Championship history to advance. West Alabama will begin a new era next season as the Tigers begin play at the new UWA Soccer Complex in 2024.
