Men’s Tennis Defeats Mississippi College Monday Afternoon

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama men's tennis team defeated Mississippi College 5-2 in a Gulf South Conference match Monday Afternoon at Vaughan Tennis Complex.

Head coach Jeff Beaman honored three seniors before the game. Ilia Dehodiuk has been at UWA for five seasons. Ilari Vesanaen has been at UWA for four seasons. Loic Danze joined the Tigers last season.

"The men battled today against a very strong team that fought at every spot," Beaman said.

The Tigers improve to 12-8 overall and finished 6-3 in GSC play. The Choctaws dropped to 10-8 overall and 4-5 in conference play.

In doubles play, Wilson Igbinovia and Nuutti Jokinen defeated MC's Joe Jarvis and Antoine Nivault on court No. 3, 6-1. Vesanaen and Danze defeated MC's Yu-Hsiang Huang and Alvaro Saint Martin on court No. 2, clinching the doubles point for the Tigers. Lucas Hammond and Marcel Hornung defeated MC's Felipe Iser and Rafael Sabio on court No. 1, 7-6.

In singles play, Jokinen fell to MC's Joe Jarvis on court No. 3, 6-1, 6-1. On court No. 2, Hornung was defeated by MC's Rafael Sabio, 6-2, 6-4. Igbinovia defeated Hsiang Wang on court No. 4, 6-2, 6-1. Danze defeated MC's Antoine Nivault on court No. 5, 6-2, 6-2. Vesanen clinched the overall win for the Tigers, by defeating MC's Alvaro Saint Martin in a three-set battle on court No. 1, 7-6, 0-6, 7-5. Hammond defeated MC's Brady McDaniel on court No. 6, 6-4, 6-2.

"We have a doubleheader Wednesday against strong teams to get ready for GSC Championship Tournament," Beaman said.
