Men's Tennis Cleans House in Win Over Shorter

ROME, Ga. - The University of West Alabama men's tennis team showed out in a 7-0 win over conference rival Shorter University on Friday afternoon from the Walt Attaway Complex.

The Tigers were explosive in doubles, with Lucas Hammond and Eita Ishikawa sweeping the Hawks at the top flight.

In singles, UWA cruised to win all six points to earn the shutout. Wilson Igbinovia clinched the match for the Tigers with his three-set victory over David Arrieta.

Federico Iturbe helped polish off the victory with his win at the No. 5 flight After splitting the first two sets, 5-7, 6-0, the freshman won the tiebreak 10-8.

"The guys played with great energy today. We've got a few things to work on still, but it's always great to get a conference win," said head coach Jeff Beaman.

West Alabama gets their first win of the season, moving to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in Gulf South Conference play. Shorter will fall to 0-3 overall and in the conference.

The men will get a long hiatus until March 1 as the Tigers will travel to Tyler, Texas to take on Midwestern State. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
