Softball Falters to Union in Game One of Conference Opener

JACKSON, Tenn. - The No. 13 University of West Alabama softball team was defeated in extra innings by Union University in game one of the Gulf South Conference series, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon.

The bats were quiet during the first five innings of play for the Tigers and the Lady Bulldogs as Madison Wright and Lainey Baker allowed five hits total during the stretch.

Ann Marie Stanbridge broke the silence in the top of the sixth with an RBI double that allowed Marissa Mitchell to score.

Union answered back in the bottom of the sixth with a Macey Neal solo homer to tie things up going into the seventh.

The Lady Bulldogs had an opportunity to take the win in the seventh, with a Sara Kate Thompson single to center field advancing a runner home. However, Kelsie Gilliam recorded the third out at home plate to send the contest to the extra innings.

After retiring all three West Alabama batters in the top of the eighth, Jennings scored the winning run for Union off an error at third base, giving the home team the win.

Baker was the X-Factor for The Lady Bulldogs, striking out 15 Tiger batters on the day and allowing only three hits.

West Alabama falls to 8-3 on the year and 0-1 in Gulf South Conference play. Union moves up to 6-3 and 1-0.

The Tigers and the Lady Bulldogs will play the final two games of the series Sunday afternoon at Fesmire Field to determine the series. The first pitch for game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
