Softball Takes Game One of Home Opener over Argos

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama softball team defeated the University of West Florida 7-1 inside the UWA Softball Complex on Friday night.

The Tigers scored their first two runs of the contest off an Argo error, as Taylor Clegg and Kelsie Giliam touched home plate on the play.

Two at-bats later, Marissa Mitchell scored on a fielder's choice, giving West Alabama a 3-0 lead early.

West Florida got themselves on the board in the top of the third as Jessie Baughan advanced home off a ground out to second, cutting the Tiger lead to two.

Emily Cowart stretched the West Alabama lead back out to three in the bottom of the third with an RBI single, allowing Stanbridge to score.

Mary Grace Sheffield scored UWA's fifth run, stealing home from third base.

Cowart struck again in the fifth inning, reaching second on an Argo error, allowing Stanbridge to touch home plate for the second time in the game.

Grace Hunter put the nail in the coffin in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single, sending Sheffield home to score the home team's seventh run, sealing the game one win.

"Maddy did a great job controlling their hitters when we needed it the most. We were given a lot of scoring opportunities, and we executed well," said head coach Stephanie Defeo

Wright (6-2) allowed only one run and three hits on the night for her sixth complete game of the year.

West Alabama moves to 10-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play. West Florida falls to 9-5 and 0-1.

The Tigers and Argos will conclude the series with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
