TYLER, Texas – Playing for the first time in two weeks, the No. 23 University of West Alabama men's tennis team was defeated by Midwestern State University 6-1, Friday afternoon from the Summer Tennis Counts on the campus of the University of Texas at Tyler.

The Mustangs, who are receiving votes in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II national rankings, improves to 3-1 on the year. The Tigers fall to 1-3.

I feel the men have been working very hard and had great energy going into this match but the layoff since their last match was a factor and MSU is a strong team.  They need to regroup and be ready for another tough opponent tomorrow.

It was a slow start for the Tigers in doubles, as the Mustangs took the first two flights to earn the point and the 1-0 lead.

MSU won the next three points in singles at the No. 2, 3 and 4 positions to clinch the match.

Jacob Tapia helped the Tigers avoid the shutout with his win at the No. 6, a  6-4, 6-4 decision to Bruno Sanchez.

The Tigers will next take on the hosts in Texas Tyler on Saturday.
