CLEVELAND, Miss. - The University of West Alabama men's tennis team defeated Delta State University 5-2, Wednesday afternoon in a Gulf South Conference contest.
The Tigers dominated doubles, winning all three doubles matches highlighted by a Nuutti Jokinen and Eita Ishikawa 6-1 decision over Goran Krivokapic and Harry Browning at the No. 2 flight.
Despite the UWA success in doubles, the Statesmen fired back in singles play with Emiliano Elizarraraz taking down Lucas Hammond at the top flight in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
West Alabama answered back, winning four of the remaining five matches, including a three-set thriller between Jacob Tapia and Krivokapic. Tapia took the first set 7-5 but fell 3-6 in set two. Tapia finished the job in a 10-point tiebreak, 10-6.
The men brought home a 5-2 victory, righting the ship after a loss to West Florida in Livingston on Sunday morning and improve to 3-5 of the year and 1-2 in the conference. Delta State falls to 2-8 and 2-4.
The Tigers will next take on No. 12 ranked Ouachita Baptist in Livingston on Sunday morning. The first serve is set for 11 a.m. at the Vaughan Tennis Complex.
