No. 8 Women's Tennis Defeats Central Oklahoma

RAYMOND, Miss. – The No. 8 University of West Alabama women's tennis team picked up a 6-1 victory over the University of Central Oklahoma in a neutral site contest from Hinds Community College on Wednesday afternoon. 

UWA wins its third match in a row and improves to 8-5 on the year. UCO slips to 4-4.

"This was a good day for the women; we talked about going out and being focused. This is a step toward next week's matches, but I am really impressed with how went out and played against a strong team," said head coach Jeff Beaman

Doubles was a breeze for the Tigers, as each flight held their opponent to just two games won en route to a clean sweep and the doubles point to get on the board. 

In a battle of top-30 duo teams in Division II, No. 12 Hardija Vidnere and Shaira Rivera (8-1) defeated No. 26 Pete Komada/Blythe Buntrock at the top flight. 

No. 45 Heden Ly and Khim Iglupas (8-1) picked up their seventh straight win at the No. 2 spot in the lineup. 

In singles, Rivera (8-1) won her seventh contest in a row and got the Tigers to a 2-0 lead with her straight-set win at the No. 2 position. 

Vidnere (6-5) kept her win streak going with four in a row on Wednesday with a 6-2, 6-4 result over Anika Ouwejan at the No. 5. 

Despite UCO avoiding the shutout at the No. 6 spot, Ly (6-5) clinched the match for the Tigers with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Nefeli Zafeiri. 

No. 7 Iglupas (9-1) earned her fifth consecutive win a the top flight. After battling with No. 57 Komada for both sets, it was the second frame where Iglupas won seven straight points in the tiebreak to take the win, 7-5, 7-6 (0). 

Emiri Takanishi (7-4) used a 10-point tiebreak to earn the win at the No. 4 flight and take down Karyna Yuchenko, 4-6, 6-3, 10-5. 

The Tigers will begin their spring break trip on Sunday against No. 18 Embry-Riddle (Fla.) in Valdosta, Georgia.
