Wright Makes History with 14 Strikeout No-Hitter as Softball Takes Down Tuskegee

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama softball team defeated Tuskegee University in doubleheader action, 5-0 and 10-1, behind 23 combined strikeouts from Madison Wright and Eleanor De Block.

GAME 1: West Alabama 5, Tuskegee 0
Madison Wright came out of the gate dealing from the circle, striking out her first two batters of the contest.

Ann Marie Stanbridge got the Tigers on the board first in the bottom of the opening inning, with a two-RBI single.

Wright continued her dominance in the top of the second inning, striking out three of four batters faced.

Taylor Clegg added to the UWA lead, 3-0, with an RBI single of her own in the bottom of the second.

In the bottom of the fourth, Riley Sullivan added another run to the home team's lead, 4-0, with an RBI base knock, and in the sixth, she smoked an RBI triple to push the lead to 5-0.

Madison Wright kept the Tuskegee offense at bay, striking out six batters in the final three innings. In the seventh, despite allowing a lead-off walk, the Senior settled in and retired the final three batters in the strikeout period to complete the no-hitter.

Facing three batters over the minimum, Wright (15-6) fired a career-high 14 strikeouts.

The Tiger ace recorded her sixth no-no of her career and the first of the 2024 season.

Wright is only the third pitcher in West Alabama softball history to strike out 14 batters in a single game, joining Zayne Smith (14 in 2001), and record holder Kacy Noland (16 in 2022).

Riley Sullivan had a perfect three-for-three day from the batter's box with two RBIs.

GAME 2: West Alabama 10, Tuskegee 1.

The Golden Tigers struck first with a sacrifice fly from Jada Chadwick in the opening frame.

West Alabama stormed ahead with a five-run first inning.

The festivities started with a three-run shot over the center wall from Ann Marie Stanbridge.

Riley Sullivan followed suit in her next at-bat with a solo homer to make it a 4-1 ball game.

The Tigers were far from done as two batters later, Emily Cowart launched a fly ball over the fence to tack on another run.

Marissa Mitchell boosted the Tiger lead to 6-1 with an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning.

Eleanor De Block and Emily Cowart added two more runs with a pair of RBI doubles to stretch the lead to 8-1.

Mary Grace Sheffield put the game out of reach with a two-run rocket over the center field wall to give West Alabama double digits in the run column, 10-1.

De Block (5-4) held the Golden Tigers offense down in the final two innings with five strikeouts to clinch the doubleheader sweep.

On the day, Wright and De Block combined for 23 strikeouts.

De Block punched out a career-high nine batters while allowing a hit and a walk in the complete game win.

The Tiger offense saw seven of the nine batters in the lineup record a hit, led by Emily Cowart's double and home run.

UWA launched four home runs on the day.

Ann Marie Stanbridge, Riley Sullivan, Mary Grace Sheffield, and Cowart all went yard.

West Alabama moves up to 23-13 overall while Tuskegee falls to 19-19.

The Tigers will return to action in a doubleheader Saturday at Lee.
