PLEASANT GROVE, Ala. - The University of West Alabama softball team scored ten runs in two innings on the way to a run-rule victory over Miles College, 10-0, Wednesday afternoon.
After Kelsie Gilliam got on first base via hit-by-pitch of the first pitch of the ballgame, the Tigers' all-time leader in stolen bases worked her way into scoring position at third base.
Taylor Clegg got the visitors on the board in the next at-bat with an RBI single down the left field line.
Ann Marie Stanbridge capped off the first inning scoring with a two-run shot to left center.
Madison Wright struck out all three batters she faced in the bottom of the first to keep Miles at bay.
West Alabama exploded in the top of the second, scoring seven runs in the stanza.
Another Clegg RBI and a throwing error scored run number four for UWA, followed by a two-run RBI single from Stanbridge to extend the lead to 6-0 two plate appearances later.
After Riley Sullivan stretched the lead to seven runs with an RBI groundout, back-to-back triples by Emily Cowart and Kori Young extended the lead to nine.
Madison Wright brought the lead to double digits, batting in the Tigers fourth straight run with a double to right field.
With Wright and the Tiger defense not allowing a hit through four innings, Eleanor De Block came on in relief and finished the job with two strikeouts and a groundout to clinch the five-inning victory.
Ann Marie Stanbridge led the way with four RBIs and her 14th home run of the season.
Of the 38 pitches thrown by Madison Wright (20-8) in the contest, 34 were called strikes.
Taylor Clegg added two RBIs.
West Alabama (30-16) clinches its 14th 30-win season in program history with the win, including two in three years at the helm for head coach Stephanie Defeo.
Miles College falls to 11-28 on the year.
West Alabama will stay on the road for its final regular season series against Shorter this weekend. The series will open with a doubleheader on Saturday. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m. EDT.
